Non-CDL trucks may need an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) if they fall under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Hours of Service (HOS) regulations. While CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) holders are more commonly associated with these requirements, certain non-CDL truck operators must also comply depending on their vehicle type, weight, and operations.

The FMCSA mandates ELD usage for vehicles that:

  • Exceed 10,001 pounds in gross vehicle weight (GVW) or combined weight (truck and trailer).
  • Transport hazardous materials requiring a placard.
  • Operate as part of interstate commerce, traveling across state lines.

If a non-CDL truck meets these criteria and the driver logs more than 8 days of HOS records within 30 days, an ELD is required to track driving hours and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

However, exemptions exist. Non-CDL trucks used for personal conveyance or short-haul operations within a 150-air-mile radius are often exempt from ELD requirements, provided they meet specific criteria.

TruckX offers easy-to-use ELD solutions designed to help both CDL and non-CDL drivers meet FMCSA regulations. By automatically tracking driving hours, generating compliance reports, and providing real-time data, TruckX ensures fleets of all sizes maintain compliance efficiently.
