Drivers may use personal conveyance to get home if the status is off-duty and not bearing the motor carrier’s business operations. For instance, drivers can use personal conveyance to drive home after completing a shift or delivering a load, as long as the trip does not further the carrier’s position for the next assignment. Other acceptable uses include traveling to a hotel, restaurant, or other location for rest or personal reasons.
However, there are restrictions on what qualifies as personal conveyance. It cannot be used for business-related activities such as driving to pick up or deliver a load or relocating a CMV to a repair shop at the direction of the motor carrier. While the FMCSA does not impose specific time or distance limits on personal conveyance, the purpose must strictly align with personal, off-duty use.
